Home School Non-Discrimination Act of 2005
BevK September 29th, 2005
To amend selected statutes to clarify existing Federal law as to the treatment of students privately educated at home under State law.
Senate Bill 1691 was introduced on Sept. 13, 2005 by Senator Craig. It is the Home School Non-Discrimination Act of 2005. I haven’t compared it to the attempt to pass this type of legislation. I do know that is fully supported by HSLDA. The House version of the bill is HR 3753.
One problem I noted in the bill is found in the section which applies to recruitment and enlistment of homeschool graduates in the armed forces. There is a list of 5 requirements. The fifth states,”(5) The home school graduate has provided the Secretary concerned with a third party verification letter of the graduate’s home school status by the Home School Legal Defense Association or a State or county home school association or organization.”
I don’t belong to HSLDA. I also don’t belong to a State or county home school association or organization. I’m not really sure how belonging to such an organization would some give greater credence to my homeschooling efforts. I’m also wondering why one specific homeschoolilng organization which does not represent even a majority of homeschoolers could be listed in this legislation by name. More money for the HSLDA coffers I guess, since to get that verification letter you’d have to be a member.
