AL: Homeschool bill revisited

BevK April 10th, 2007

A bill in the State Legislature this week could allow homeschooled students to participate in public-school, extracurricular activities.

This article pretty much lays out the pro and con arguments used in these debates in any state that has decided to allow homeschoolers to participate in extra curricular activities. In my experience, most of the arguments against are just smoke to cloud the real issue that some folks have against homeschooling. They don’t like that homeschoolers have opted out of public school and they worry that homeschoolers will take over positions that public schooled children would have had. Well, they do take over a position that someone else might have had, but those who see homeschooled kids as community kids, don’t have a problem with that. Fair-minded public school parents want all kids to have a chance to play ball or run track. In the long run, they win out over the protectionist lot and their smoke screen of what ifs.
