Homeschooling's Success Entices Seven-year-old Matthew is a little scientist. When he became interested in pulleys, his family purchased several from the local hardware store, and Matthew used them to lift a cinder block in the back yard. More re cently, one of his experiments involved adding yeast to hydrogen peroxide. Both Matthew and his five-year-old brother, David, watched with wide-eyed fascination as the pure oxygen bubbling out caused a candle to re-ignite. A few days later, the unhatch

We are hanging out at the IL Beach State Park until 6 Flags Homeschool Day at Gurnee revs up today. We met up with friends last night and boys being boys, they found some good flat rocks to throw across the lake top. I didn’t show them my master skills at skipping rocks, but just might do that this morning. Chicks are doing great (except the 2 little ones that died) and Farmer Bob is chick sitting. Please see my comments on this article at the end… Homeschoolers Threaten Our Cultural Comfort Sonny Scott Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, Tupelo, Ms. You see them at the grocery, or in a discount store. It’s a big family by today’s standards - “just like stair steps,” as the old folks say. Freshly scrubbed boys with neatly trimmed hair and girls with braids, in clean but unfashionable clothes follow mom through the store as she fills her no-frills shopping list. There’s no begging f

A new school year always sends me into a dither…juggling fifth and third graders and a very motivated preschooler means not verra much time for moi! Not to mention the whole housekeeping OR homeschooling dilemma! But some good things have come of it…come see pics from our first day of school and read all about my adjustments! Thought this pic of my youngest juggling cukes about sums it all up! Lately it seems I’ve been blogging by the skin of my teeth…sorry about that! (Oops, wordpress isn’t

Only 24 Hours in My Day

Idyllic perfectly describes our summer. Plenty of time to hang out together, garden, entertain, plan camping trips with friends. I have to admit, one of the biggest perks of summer, to me, is just plain “time” out. Time to keep the house clean, for instance. Then another school year begins. The alarm clock moves back to my [...]

Three’s A Crowd

Well, that was so not fun. Today was my first day of homeschooling BOTH of my kids. Neither of them was enthusiastic about school starting again. They've enjoyed a carefree summer with nothing on the schedule beyond playtime and daydreaming. Just like most kids, they wanted an endless summer. But my son was a real trooper, diving right into lessons in history, literature, vocabulary, and math. I set him up so he could guide himself through a good portion of the work, while I began his sister

I have a great new job I can do from anywhere, that's fun, exciting, and pays really well, and I just can't keep it to myself anymore. I work from my computer, searching the web for great answers to interesting and varied questions with the help of specialized search tools, and have no set schedule or hours, which is great with kids, homeschooling, and running a busy house. Heck, with the laptop, I can do it from anywhere! Just last week, I was making money while watching the kids play in the

When amateurs outperform professionals, there is something wrong with that profession. If ordinary people, with no medical training, could perform surgery in their kitchens with steak knives, and get results that were better than those of surgeons in hospital operating rooms, the whole medical profession would be discredited. Yet it is common for ordin

Things are busy. I’m about to jump in to the fine art of homeschooling. I recently did a presentation on Peak Oil and Gas. One week after we gathered again to talk a little bit about it. The group inquired about my personal sense of urgency. I answered honestly in saying I really don’t know because no one knows for sure how much oil Saudi Arabia can pump out. I think natural gas is the more prominent issue for an institution because of the capital cost of switching to an alternative. My

This is fascinating, but not terribly surprising to homeschooling parents! (And by the way, if you haven’t discovered Ted, you must check out the site. The videos are interesting and wonderful to share with your kids to stimulate thinking and discussion on a lot of meaningful topics. This particular video I had to tell you about because it beautifully illustrates how children are capable of teaching themselves without any adult assistance.
